Reports to: Community Recreation Coordinator



Richmond Parks and Recreation is seeking a qualified candidate to fill the position of Special Projects Assistant for the school year to help run programs, plan events, and positively promote the Richmond park system. This position has flexible dates and hours. Some weekend and evening hours will be required.


Job Functions

Responsibilities include:

  • Planning and overseeing events

  • Creating a social media plan to engage and grow increase number of followers.

  • Creating content for the monthly park newsletter, website, and weekly newsletter to parents of children in our programs.

  • Assisting in larger projects and events at the Parks Department.

  • Compiling and assessing statistical information gathered through surveys.

  • Creating reports on how make events better in the future.

  • Following the policies and procedures set forth by the City of Richmond and the Richmond Parks and Recreation Department.

  • Handling administration and paperwork related to the events mentioned above, which may include preparing and presenting reports.

  • Attend events, conferences, and meetings on behalf of the Parks Department, sometimes after hours or on weekends.

  • Provide supplemental support to the Community Recreations Coordinator and assist in larger projects and events. May include work related to the broader vision of the Park Department, and other duties as assigned.


Job Qualifications

  • Preferred:  College student majoring in Recreation Management, Communications, Public Relations, or related major.

  • Experience in marketing, communications, sponsorship/grant solicitation, and public presentation desired.

  • Previous experience working with children as well as the ability to work with children of all ages.

  • Strong supervisory and management skills and ability to work alone with minimum supervision, often under time pressure. Capacity to work on several tasks at the same time and complete assignments effectively amidst frequent distractions and interruptions.

  • Knowledge of social media platforms and Microsoft Office as well as a working knowledge of basic accounting principles and ability to perform relevant arithmetic calculations, maintain accurate records; prepare and submit detailed reports as required.

  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communications skills. Working knowledge of standard English grammar, spelling and punctuation, and ability to compose and prepare correspondence. 

  • Ability to follow the policies and procedures set forth by the City of Richmond and the Richmond Parks and Recreation Department.

  • Ability to handle confidential data with professional discretion.

  • Ability to regularly work extended evening and/or weekend hours and occasionally travel out of town for meetings/conferences. Possession of a valid Indiana driver's license, a demonstrated safe driving record.

  • Maintain contact with co-workers, other City departments, and the public for purposes of exchanging information, coordinating operations, and resolving problems.



Physical Requirements

This position requires the ability to handle/grasp objects, close vision, and hearing sounds/ communication. Physical effort while conducting programs/activities may involve standing/walking for long periods and lifting objects 20-50 pounds. It demands the physical ability to move about the Richmond parks in various environmental conditions.
