As part of UAB's strategic plan, a Grand Challenge call for ambitious and impressive proposals was announced. Out of 77 initial entries, Dr. Mona Fouad's proposal, “Healthy Alabama 2030: Live HealthSmart,” was selected as the inaugural winner. Dr. Fouad and her 90+ team plan to move the state's health rankings from the bottom worst by 2030 through comprehensive and systematic policy, systems and environment improvements.
By focusing specifically on the three major drivers of health disparities – nutrition, physical activity and prevention and wellness, Dr. Fouad and her team anticipates seeing improvements in chronic disease outcomes long-term.
Over the course of this initial three-year investment by UAB, evidence-based strategies and promising practices will be implemented in Live HealthSmart demonstration zones – Woodlawn/Kingston, Ensley/Bush Hills, Eastlake and on UAB campus.
