About

The LBJ100 Bicycle Tour was created in 2008 as part of the many events recognizing the 100th anniversary of the birth of President Johnson. The national historical park, Friends of LBJ National Park, and the Hill Country Bicycle Touring Club joined forces to produce the first ride that attracted about 460 cyclists. Since that time the event has occurred annually in March. In 2013 the ride had 1563 registered cyclists. The ride allows for a different experience than that usually realized in this national historical park. Although the President and Mrs. Johnson were not usual cyclists, their children and grandchildren spent many hours riding the roadways of the LBJ Ranch and surrounding country roads of Gillespie and Blanco counties. Luci Johnson, the unofficial heroine of the ride, has joined her husband, Ian Turpin, for each ride and always completes one of the routes before returning to guide her own tour in the afternoon. Luci explained that, "Ian introduced me to bicycling on the ranch many years ago and all the family had bikes at the ready throughout Mom's (Lady Bird Johnson) life. The family continues to enjoy the LBJ Ranch, but following the death of Mrs. Johnson in 2007, the ranch was opened for self-guiding tours by vehicle, bicycle, or foot. The National Park Service recognizes the importance of varied experience and outdoor recreation. The park's management and staff fully endorse and support the annual event. Funds raised through registrations, sponsors, and raffles support other educational, recreational, and historic preservation events and projects in the national park.
