NOTE: This volunteer opportunity is for confirmed MAPS 2.0 volunteers who will be serving with The PSU Landing @ FUMC on Tuesday nights. You will use this service opportunity to track your training dates and shifts and log the hours you have served.
Position Description:
Are you interested in volunteering at a student houseless shelter that is just beginning to get off the ground? Are you interested in assisting a community partner in providing a stable environment, stable relationships, and stable resources for students experiencing houselessness? Then join the MAPS Program and become a student volunteer!
The Student Community Engagement Office is seeking enthusiastic applicants to join our MAPS 2.0 team working with The Landing at FUMC student shelter starting Winter term 2021.
First United Methodist Church is opening a secular and inclusive transitional living program specifically for Portland State students - the first of its kind. By joining this program, located only a few blocks from campus, you will be assisting in running the program during assigned and consistent shifts. You will have the opportunity to make friends with a diverse group of student volunteers and student residents and you will receive training on interpersonal dynamics, conflict resolution, and counseling skills. FUMC and SCEC have committed to making this in-person volunteer opportunity as safe as possible to stop the spread of COVID-19.
Requirements

In-person (socially distanced COVID precautions will be observed)

Where: First United Methodist Church, 1838 SW Jefferson St, Portland, OR 97201

When: One two hour shift per week, Tuesday evenings from 6pm - 8pm

Start Date: Trainings will begin the week of January 18th (week 3); volunteering begins in early/mid February after training is complete.

Tuesday evenings from 6-8pm, weekly starting in early/mid February
Qualifications:

Be enrolled at PSU for each academic term during the 2020-21 academic year.

Maintain institutional an undergraduate GPA of 2.0 or a graduate GPA of 2.5

Interest in assisting student residents in navigating resources on and off campus

Strong interpersonal skills and are comfortable working with people

Ability to model leadership, professional behavior, and be a strong role model
Our Community Partner
About the PSU Landing at FUMC: The mission of the PSU Landing at FUMC is to provide a temporary safe haven for houseless Portland State University (PSU) students. Landing facilities are located at the First United Methodist Church (FUMC) in the Goose Hollow neighborhood. The landing will serve 8 students every night and provide space for sleeping, two meals every day, storage, showers, laundry, internet and computer access.
