Heart to Heart Hospice

About

Volunteers are such a special part of the hospice care team. They can provide a variety of supportive services to enhance the quality of life for our patients and their families. Whether you prefer to interact with patients and families, or prefer to assist with tasks in an office setting, every volunteer has something significant to contribute to our programs and those we care for.

To be sure that our patients and families receive the highest quality of care and services, all of our volunteers must submit to a background check and drug screening. Once you are approved as a volunteer with Heart to Heart, you will go through orientation and work with our volunteer coordinator to help determine what type of volunteer assignments are most suited to your interests, abilities and experience.

We have both administrative and direct volunteers that receive training on the history of hospice, our care philosophy, and what we do and don't do as hospice providers. In addition to aforementioned requirements, our direct volunteers receive additional training on a number of topics to perform multiple roles or to support our patients in a single capacity. Some of these topics include safety, communication and family dynamics, the dying process, grief and bereavement. We want our volunteers to be prepared to provide the highest caliber of support to our programs, and the patients and families we serve. Our administrative volunteers can assist their local hospice program with answering calls, making copies, filing, mailings, data entry, putting together admission packets and training materials, or anything that helps to enrich our programs and assist our staff members.

Our direct volunteers can help our patients and families by:

  • Visiting patients regularly to provide companionship and/or lift patient's spirits
  • Sitting with patients to relieve families
  • Helping with light housekeeping
  • Working on life-history projects with patients for families to have
  • Providing bereavement or grief support to families after the loss of their loved ones
  • Making cards, sewing blankets and creating crafts for social support
  • Providing specialized services like pet therapy and music enhancement
  • Being patient, kind and reliable
  • Being considerate of all beliefs/religious customs.

While being a direct volunteer is not always easy, you enhance the lives of so many patients and families in everything that you do, and your support is priceless to us.
