The Mandela Washington Fellowship for Young African Leaders, begun in 2014, is the flagship program of the Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI) that empowers young people through academic coursework, leadership training, and networking. In 2019, the Fellowship will provide 700 outstanding young leaders from Sub-Saharan Africa with the opportunity to hone their skills at a U.S. college or university with support for professional development after they return home.
The University of Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL) Leadership in Civic Engagement Institute examines Civic Engagement and how individuals and organizations have shaped local communities by identifying, analyzing, collaborating and solving societal needs and issues. Civic Engagement will be addressed across sectors (private, public and non-profit) and in distinct academic domains that include business, leadership and entrepreneurship, community development and human rights, ethics, communications and government.
Our Institute combines academic presentations, workshops, site visits, group assignments, community service, peer collaboration, leadership skills-building, networking and cultural activities. Additionally, we have secured the participation of an impressive and diverse cohort of UNL faculty representing distinct academic disciplines, as well as campus administrative leaders, staff, and numerous local and regional civic organizations. Fellows will explore Civic Engagement from a U.S. perspective and experience the interaction of individuals and organizations, trace Civic Leadership and its social development in a U.S. context, and explore the ways in which it shapes policy, governance, human rights, business and society. Simultaneously, UNL looks forward to building and cultivating ties with Mandela Washington Fellows beyond the life of the Institute as we are keenly aware that your presence on our campus will positively impact UNL and the community organizations with which you will interact.
