I mingled with the patient families in the waiting room. This week was a bit frustrating for me because the unit I am assigned to didn’t have much of a need for me being there. They had their own volunteers, so I had to kind of find a place to fit in. The thing I liked most about this experience is that I got to experience more than I thought since I was moved to a different unit. The most challenging thing was familiarizing myself with the new unit after I had already gotten use to palliative care. My biggest take away is to learn how to have patience.
This day I only got to volunteer for an hour because most of the patients were in recovery and were not ready to see anyone yet. The patients I did see were wonderful! The nurses are always so helpful and choose the patients who they think would benefit the most from having someone come by their room.
