Last Make the Road:
Today was my last day at make the road and I have to say overall the experience was one that I enjoyed very much. I’ve been working with a 3rd grader named David everyday since I started Make the Road. David always did his work before anything else and I think is smarter than maybe others might see in him. David absolutely loved reading books and would grab as many as he could. Sometimes David would read the books, other times he would just ask me about the pictures, and if he was didn't know the words then I’d read it along with him. And when we’d be done reading all the books he wanted to that day I’d let him draw pictures in my notebook or we’d play tic-tac-toe. His mom used to peek in and smile while we were doing his homework or reading. I always tried to treat David as if he was my little brother because i remember being in an after school program and having role models like that in my life. I believe that often times that it just takes a role model outside of a parental guardian to really take the kid in and make them feel as if they have more people who care about them. It’s very easy for people outside of their ethnic community to just pass them off. These kids love learning, it just takes more help for some of them, but even more than that, they're kids who enjoy life just like me and you.

There is two films. The first one being a documentary about an immigrant family living NYC. They live in the same part of the city as the rest of their culture. After the film we interviewed the person who wrote the film. The second film was a lot longer and was a documentary about a mental hospital in africa, it was very scattered and obscene as he documented the many patients and discussed the poor circumstances. There was often no resources, medicines, etc. they believed this was the work of witchcraft and would bring in priests for exorcisms as well as abusing them. Not to mention the hospital was by a school dn kids would often walk through it. After this documentary we interviewed the person who documented this film. He could only speak french so we needed a translator. One of the strategies the filmer used in order to feel that he wasn’t filming just the patients was filming the scenery so that the patients wouldn’t figure that he was filming just them.
I felt that the film was extremely raw and powerful. To actually see the severity of circumstances in that mental hospital. Seeing things like that has a lasting impact on one's self. I didn’t fully realize how these kinds of extreme circumstances were so apart of everyday life in africa. They are so far behind in advancement, Technology, Medicine, socially, etc.

4th Make the Road
Today David wasn’t there so I helped with John Carlos and he didn't want to do his school work at all. He’s one of the younger kids at make the road and seems pretty hyper, i think it’s hard for him to sit still, he reminds me of myself at that age. He enjoyed messing with the other college student who participate in make the road and talking to the other girls. Even though it was much harder to get him to finish his work than david, it was still enjoyable as much as it was challenging. John carlos is without a doubt capable of completing the work he’s just a free spirit i guess you could say. After John Carlos got picked up there wasn’t much else to do because not many of the kids were there today, so Dante, Peter and I went to the bakery next door and got Doughnuts. The doughnuts were super cheap and super big, that's a blessing. Since there really isn’t much to reflect on then i suppose i could talk about David’s older brother Michael. The influence that Michael has on his baby brother is so evident. He’s really smart and always finishes his homework early. I rarely see him ask for help unless it's to check over his answers. Michael doesn’t talk as much as David but it’s nice to see him join in on the joking and laughing sometimes. I really believe he enjoyed make the road more than it may have seemed. David really looks up to Micheal and often asks to read the same books he’s reading. That’s how i was with my older brother. They seem to be each other's best friend.

3rd Make the Road:
Today was my third time working with David. He’s gotten comfortable with all the new faces at Make the Road. We were reading an Animal book with a bunch of different animals in it and he was telling me all his favorite ones, which ones he thought were cool and which ones he thought weren't. David even asked me which animal were my favorites. David's favorite animal out of the whole book was a rhinoceros and Mine was the Panther. He also really liked all the bugs in the book that i thought were gross but we agreed that most of the amphibians were awesome. I always make sure David's school work is done before we go through books and draw. However I honestly hope that more than just getting his school work done, that he’s connecting with people and having fun at the same time. I don’t want David to come to Make the Road and feel like he’s sitting in another classroom. I try to make it a fun environment while still getting his work done. He’s extremely smart but he’s told me he doesn’t always enjoy school, which is pretty normal stuff. This experience is super fun for me to, David’s just a happy kid and makes others around him laugh. He’s an enjoyable kid, I’m glad i chose Make the Road.

2nd Make the Road:
Today is my second time coming to make the road and working with David. He’s definitely more comfortable than he was the first day with all the new faces. He forgot his pencil and needed a glue stick so i went a got for him so he could do his english homework, where he had to cut out these words and glue them in a certain order. We also got to color certain words for his homework, he seemed to enjoy that more. He used peach a lot, that really seemed to be the only color David wanted to use so had to tell him to grab one or two more different colors so his teacher wouldn't take points off. After we finished we read a lot of books, one book about animals, one about trucks, one about a caterpillar and one about superheroes. Even when i thought he would get tired of reading books he didn’t. We read all the way up until his mom came and got his brother and Him. Hopefully tomorrow he might want to draw or something. But i can tell he loves books. He also got a new Power Rangers backpack and new light to put on his bag from the book fair. And right before he had to leave he said he couldn’t find his coat, so we looked around for about twenty minutes and it turns out it was in his backpack...funny kid.

1st Make the Road:
Today was my first day participating in Make the Road. I met a kid named David. He seemed a little shy but I’m sure he’ll come out of it the more we work together. He’s really smart and don't need a whole bunch of help on his homework, i just watched and made sure he was doing it correctly. He was doing hi math homework where he had to add and subtract, he draws circles and crosses them off as a tool for making sure he’s doing his math correctly. Is showed him how to it on his fingers as another alternative. He continued to use both methods. It didn’t take him long to do the homework at all. After that he read a book he said he’d gotten from the book fair at school. He kept to himself the whole time he was reading. I’m sure it was partly having to do that he wasn’t as comfortable with me and partly because he was really into the book, which is understandable. He talked to his older brother a little bit but that was really the extent of his talking. His brother him stayed a little longer than the other kids. I really don’t have too much to talk about because David was pretty shy today but I’m sure as time goes on I’ll have more stories to tell about David.
