Setting up, helping film, and breaking down the camera equipment for the 2022 Trinity Men's Soccer Spring Game.
This week, I moved to be an assistant with the U10 team. They were slightly more focused and I came away feeling fulfilled that I had really taught soccer in a way I was frustrated I couldn't with the younger age.
This week, the two days each presented very different problems for me. The first day I had 16 kids to myself and struggled to keep all of their attention at once throughout, the second day I only had 6, including some of my usual troublemakers so despite the fewer numbers they were less engaged than usual. Definitely had to exercise my patience this week.
Over these 2 weeks, I coached at 4 sessions with UCA at the 8 year old level. I have seen some development both in the kids' abilities and also in my own ability to be patient in frustrating situations. This was the final set of practices before the rosters are settled and games begin. I'm hoping that going forward the consistency and structure will help us continue to improve as a group!
While I still feel like I have much to learn to become a good coach, this week I saw progress within my group of players in how they were looking to pass, and most importantly they were having fun and coming back.
This was my first week coaching with the Urban Champions Academy. I arrived early both days to help set up the fields and goals and was there to greet most of the kids that I worked with. I was assigned to the U8 level where really it is about having fun as much has it is about practicing and learning soccer, a dynamic which I really enjoyed. I liked getting to know the other coaches and learning from them about how to teach kids and at the same time make sure they enjoy themselves in each game or drill.
