Today was a bit slower on the floor than normal, with much fewer calls, fewer tubes coming from the tubing system, etc. One thing, though, that struck me was a conversation I heard between some of the medical professionals on the unit talking about a patient on the floor. They were wondering what got him up in the mornings because he has no money, job, community, etc and was really, really ill in the ICU. It just got me thinking that inside this beautiful, busy hospital are many suffering individuals who have literally nothing, and that just makes you stop.
Today was a normal, busy morning in Wendel 1. The best and most meaningful part would be having a longer conversation with the charge nurse because she was the charge nurse when I volunteered all of last year and being able to chat and catch up was great because it just reminds me how much I love this unit and how I feel known by some of the staff, even though I'm just a volunteer!
